Mental health support

Mental health impact of cancer

Going through cancer, whether it’s you or someone you care about, is tough. You’re probably dealing with a lot of questions and feelings that don’t always make sense. We want you to know you’re not alone.

Whether you’re looking for support for yourself or trying to figure out how to help a loved one, we’re with you. Even just a small step forward can be a big help.

Are you going through or been through cancer yourself? Do you have a loved one going through, or having been through, cancer? There are ways to help you during and after cancer.

For those going through cancer

Going through cancer is tough – there’s no getting around that. It’s normal to feel all kinds of emotions, from fear and anger to hope and relief. Whatever you’re feeling, it’s okay.

One thing that can really help is leaning on people you trust – friends, family, or support groups. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it, whether that’s someone to listen or help with practical stuff.

Taking care of your mental health matters just as much as your physical health. Try to find little moments that bring you comfort or calm, like a walk outside, a hobby, or just breathing deeply.

If things ever feel too much, reaching out to a professional – like a counsellor or therapist – can make a big difference. Remember, asking for support isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a smart step toward feeling better.

You’re not alone in this – there’s help and understanding out there, and it’s okay to lean on it.

It’s tough watching someone you care about go through cancer. You might feel overwhelmed, unsure what to say or do, or worried about how to support them without overstepping. That’s completely normal.

It’s okay if you don’t have all the answers – no one would expect you to! Sometimes just being there, listening, or offering a little normalcy can mean the world. It’s okay to take care of yourself too – supporting someone through cancer can be emotionally draining.

Here are some simple ways to help and look after yourself along the way:

  • Keep checking in, even if it feels like small gestures
  • Don’t be afraid to ask how they want to be supported
  • Follow their lead on if they feel like talking about things or not in that moment
  • Reach out to friends, family, or support groups for yourself
  • Remember it’s okay to have your own feelings about this

You’re not alone in this – but the most important thing is to also Say Something when you need a bit of support too.
